CTIA: GENBAND Targets the All-IP Mobile Operator

03/31/2009

GENBAND Inc. is targeting all-IP mobile operator deployments with a new IP gateway, and by adding mobile enhancements to its G9 Converged Gateway and the S3 Session Border Controller.

The 14-slot S9 Multimedia S9 IP gateway addresses IMS, FMC and LTE technologies with a big increase in capacity, including signaling bandwidth of up to 12gbps, media bandwidth up to 24gbps and up to 150,000 concurrent sessions and 900 calls per second. Capabilities include peering/interconnect and access; protocol and network interworking and interoperability; multi-level security for networks and applications; session and service level visibility via real time analytics; carrier grade redundancy; and Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance, Security (FCAPS) management via the widely-used GenView. Later phases will integrate FMC security and deep packet inspection. It complements the company’s existing two-slot, ATCA-based S2 Gateway.

GENBAND also announced new mobile-centric features for the G9 gateway to help drive migration to all-IP next-generation networks such as LTE. With the addition of CDMA capabilities as well as satellite interconnectivity, GENBAND’s G9 gateway now enables cost-effective IP-transcoding applications for all major network types. The G9 also adds support for enterprise femtocells, allowing seamless mobility within small and medium enterprises.

The company also has added a fully compliant IPX-proxy offering to its S3 SBC to deliver high-performance routing for multimedia as well as emerging mobile applications.

The S3 is also at the heart of interconnection efforts too: It has received SIPconnect Compliant certification from the SIP Forum, validating that the S3 provides reliable direct IP peering between SIP IP PBXs and operator VoIP networks, overcoming vendor incompatibilities. And, it’s received certification from the GSM Association’s PathFinder program, which is an interconnection effort based on open ENUM industry standards

“CTIA 2009 marks significant milestones for GENBAND as we roll out a wave of innovation that enables all-IP deployments at the core and edge of networks,” said Charlie Vogt, CEO of GENBAND, in a statement. “Today’s operators not only want the highest scale and performance in the industry, but they also are looking for ongoing investment protection in their network as they migrate to the all-IP future. These product developments demonstrate our commitment to delivering innovative, best-in-class technology that enables cost effective migration to IMS and LTE.”

In a separate announcement, GENBAND announced that competitive carrier TelNet Worldwide Inc. has deployed GENBAND G9 Converged Gateways, C3 Signaling Controllers, and S3 Session Border Controllers to create an IP service delivery environment.

TelNet had previously deployed GENBAND’s G9 and C3 platforms for packet trunking of voice traffic across its fiber-based network. With its transition to all-IP, the company is using the G9 and C3 to intelligently route traffic across its network using cost-effective IP trunks. In addition, many enterprises are replacing their standard PBXs with IP PBXs, and GENBAND’s S3 is providing the security and interworking so that IP PBXs can peer directly with TelNet Worldwide’s IP network.
