Free to Roam: MetroPCS, Leap Join Forces
11/07/2008
Last year MetroPCS Communications Inc. tried to solve its footprint problem with a proposed $5 billion purchase of Leap Wireless International Inc.. That offer eventually fell through but now the two are hoping to break out beyond their status as regional wireless carriers with a roaming agreement. Starting next week, subscribers on their top-tier plans will be able to roam freely across both networks, while others will pay $5 per month. It’s a savvy way for the two budget carriers to take on the Big Three nationwide operators, though their coverage still is conspicuously absent in some NFL markets, like Chicago and New York City.
