France Telecom: Robot Looking for Broken Undersea Cable

12/22/2008

France Telecom on Monday dispatched a robot to the bottom of the sea to locate the severed cable that’s causing Internet traffic disruptions in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The cable was severed on Friday on the network route between Sicily and northern Egypt. France Telecom said it suspects a ship’s anchor or an undersea earthquake cut the cable.

The provider now is waiting on the robot to locate the severed ends and haul them to the surface where workmen can repair the cable. Full Internet service might not be restored until Dec. 31.
