NXTcomm: Foundry Networks Adds Functionality to NetIron Routers

06/17/2008

Foundry Networks Inc. announced at NXTcomm it has added enhanced functionality to its multiservice NetIron XMR backbone routers and NetIron MLX metro routers to deliver efficient, scalable growth for service providers.

Foundry now provides 320gbps link aggregation capacity. For increased capacity needs, Foundry’s NetIron XMR and MLX routers enable customers to aggregate up to 32 ports of 10-Gigabit Ethernet to provide an aggregated link capacity of 320gbps. With the 10GbE density of up to 128 ports of wire-speed connectivity in a single NetIron router, service providers can trunk existing 10GbE ports without additional router hardware or optical infrastructure upgrades.

The routers also deliver more efficient scaling of Carrier Ethernet services through MPLS integration with Layer 2 networks. This functionality provides uniform end-to-end monitoring using IEEE 802.1ag and increased resiliency by coupling MPLS resiliency with advanced Layer 2 protection mechanisms, said the company.

Foundry’s XMR Series’ Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) capabilities also allow service providers to suppress the instability of customer networks from the provider backbone while maintaining reachability to the customer network. The increased network stability results from the ability to increase peering with other service providers and the ability to increase the number of IP services and BGP/MPLS VPN services.
