Emerson Network Power Gauges Data Center Consumption
12/29/2008
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report on the data center as an environmental drain is now well known. According to the report, in 2006 data centers in the United States devoured 61 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy, forking out $4.5 billion for the privilege. Both of those numbers had doubled from the year 2000. The report helped spur eco-friendly initiatives in the communications sector. And, until the economy took over as the central issue for high-tech and the world at large, talk about how our industry could become more eco-friendly dominated many industry discussions. But identifying how much power data centers use is a key part of figuring out how to manage that use more efficiently. And Emerson Network Power (EMR) has set out to do just that in its latest series of white papers.
