EMC Reportedly Buys Assets to Forward Cloud Strategy

01/06/2009

Storage company EMC Corp. (EMC) reportedly has acquired assets from open source software support tool outfit SourceLabs Inc. in an effort to expand its play in cloud computing.

Terms of the deal, which was not mentioned on either company’s Web site as of early Tuesday morning, were not specified in the Network World story posted Monday.

SourceLabs, according to its Web site, serves thousands of IT professionals with patent-pending support technology. The company was founded in 2004, and is privately held and backed by U.S and European venture capital firms. The management team includes executives and engineers from Amazon.com, BEA Systems, Computer Associates, PeopleSoft, Mercury, Microsoft, and other leading technology companies.

EMC last year around this time unveiled its software-as-a-service (SaaS) strategy and the release of MozyEnterprise for online backup of desktops, laptops and remote Windows servers. The company also announced several new reseller agreements and said it is expanding its relationship with Verizon Business to offer this new set of SaaS capabilities.

SaaS and cloud computing are both based on the concept of allowing customers’ services to reside in the service provider cloud as opposed to having all the hardware and applications at the customer premises, meaning customers have fewer upfront capital costs and ongoing operational responsibilities related to those applications and related gear.
