Earth, Wind and Google: Powering the Data Center

It’s been widely reported that data centers are a major energy eater and thus drain on the environment. And many data center equipment suppliers, including Cisco Systems Inc.(CSCO), Sun Microsystems Inc. (JAVA) and others, have offered energy-saving gear to address that. But Google Inc. (GOOG) has gone a step further.

The search giant has reportedly filed a patent for a data center that powers itself using wind turbines and wave-powered generators. Time magazine recognized Google for this innovation, naming it one of the best inventions of 2008.
