DTV Conversion Fuels RCN Programming Progress

Powered by now-available analog spectrum, triple play cable provider RCN Corp. has added five new international premium networks and two new subscription-only Video ON DEMAND (SVOD) programming packages.

Cable companies are finding that retired analog spectrum can be used to provide additional programming to customers, including content in high-definition (HD) format.

TV providers are also beginning to realize the value of ethnic programming, with Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) offering a free year of Spanish-language programming to new customers of its FiOS TV service.

The new channels include Filipino, Korean and Russian content. Two new SVOD programming offerings include Bollywood Hits ON DEMAND and Filipino ON DEMAND.

RCN did not provide subscription VoD pricing or say if the five new channels carry a charge. Subscription VoD differs from pay VoD in that it carries a set monthly charge for on-demand programming, while pay VoD implies users pay by the title they watch. VoD systems can also provide free content.

“Our ongoing commitment to provide the most innovative programming from around the world to our customers is what motivates us to continue building our international channel lineup,” said RCN president and CEO, Peter Aquino, in prepared comments. “Our vision is enabled by RCN’s Analog Crush project where new spectrum real estate is now available for highly desired and exciting new content.”

These new channels are available to RCN customers located in markets that have been converted to an all-digital spectrum as part of RCN’s Analog Crush project, including Boston Chicago, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City.
