DIRECTV Targets Local High-Def Programming

Continues HD Race with Comcast, Others

Sateliite video services provider DIRECTV Inc. (DTV) today claimed it now offers local HD broadcasts in 91 cities, representing 81 percent of U.S. TV households.

DIRECTV is amidst a feverish marketing and sales campaign with cable giant Comcast Corp. (CMCSA), which claims in its TV ads that it has more HD at any time, in any city than the satellite operator.

DIRECTV is focusing on heavily promoting its prized seasonal asset, NFL Sunday Ticket, a package that provides out–of-market NFL games that may not otherwise be carried on TV or cable networks.

The company claims it will add 30 more HD local channel markets by yearend, when it will provide local HD broadcast channels in 121 cities, representing more than 88 percent of U.S. TV households.
