CTIA Targets MMS Interop with New Spec
12/20/2008
Ever tried to send an wireless MMS message — say, a picture message — to someone on a different carrier network? You might have found that the message never reached its destination. That’s because there’s a marked lack of interoperability between carriers. CTIA hopes to fix that beginning next year with a new interoperability specification targeting enhanced multimedia messaging. The wireless trade association says it has the support of all U.S. carriers, which will start implementing the spec in the third quarter of 2009. And no wonder: consider the example of SMS messaging: Texting has virtually exploded worldwide thanks to the fact that messages can be sent between virtually any handset and across any network. CTIA’s Wireless Internet Caucus document, “Final Set of Use Cases and Call Flows,” talks about group messaging and presence updates. It was developed by the Enhanced Messaging Action Team, one of eight groups within the caucus.
