COMPTEL: XO Completes Nationwide IP Network Upgrade

02/26/2008

XO Communications (Booth 618) completed a capacity upgrade of its nationwide IP network to meet the growing demand for high-speed Internet access services as XO Communications continues to expand more aggressively into the IP transit services market, said the company. In addition, XO Communications has expanded the number of locations from which it can provide 10 gigabit Ethernet IP Transit services to 83 locations nationwide.

XO Communications deployed the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System in the core of its nationwide IP network, which supports a range of services, including high-speed dedicated Internet access, IP transit, IP VPN and VoIP services for businesses, large enterprises and service providers. The upgrade increased the company's IP network capacity by 100 percent and sets the stage for a four-fold increase, while providing the ability to scale to a multiterabit capable router complex, said XO.

“We’ve increased IP network capacity to meet the explosive demand for bandwidth from enterprises and carrier customers,” said Randy Nicklas, CTO at XO Communications. “In addition, our IP network upgrade expands our capabilities in the high-speed network services market by allowing us to offer high-speed 10gbps IP transit services on a wider nationwide basis.”

XO High Speed IP Transit services provide cable companies, content providers, enterprises, and domestic and international telecommunications companies with fast, reliable Internet backbone access, without the cost of building and managing a Tier 1 network, said XO. The services are available in 83 locations nationwide, including three new locations: NAP of the Americas in Miami, 56 Marietta in Atlanta, and the Westin Building in Seattle.

XO High Speed IP Transit services provide DS3, OC3, OC12, OC48, Fast Ethernet, gigabit and 10 gigabit Ethernet service options; full port or burstable billing options; specialized routing options including border gateway protocol; and connectivity to  content and access destinations on the Internet.

The upgrade of the XO IP network follows the latest expansion of the XO long-haul transport network to deliver a broader range of high-capacity network transport services, including Ethernet, private line and wavelength services.
