Calix Unveils VDSL2, 10gigE Aggregation Solutions
Paula Bernier
06/10/2008 Multiservice access vendor Calix today introduced new solutions the company says enable fiber-like speed on copper and provide highly redundant 10gigE aggregation and transport. Both solutions will be demonstrated next week at NXTcomm in Las Vegas. The Calix E5-120 and E5-121 Ethernet Service Platforms (ESPs) support VDSL2 access and interoperate with ADSL modems already deployed in service provider networks – a feature Calix refers to as ADSL fallback. Additonally, the E5-121 combo platform supports lifeline and SIP voice services as well as VDSL2 for broadband services. With 1.5 RU form factors, the E5-120 and E5-121 address low-density, high-capacity broadband applications. Chibardun Telephone Cooperative in Cameron, Wisc., which has been using the Calix ADSL2+ product to deliver video, is among the carriers planning to move to this VDSL2 solution. The E5-120 will be on display at NXTcomm as part of a live, advanced IP services demonstration that includes Microsoft Mediaroom middleware, HD linear and on-demand video content, and various interactive services. Both the E5-120 and E5-121 are available now in limited quantities, with general availability slated for the third quarter. In other news from Calix today, the company unveiled the Calix E5-400 for 10 gigabit Ethernet and multiple gigabit Ethernet aggregation and transport of both Ethernet services and legacy services including POTS, DS3, specials and SONET. The solution is a hardened, 1 rack unit product and, like the other Calix products, comes with the Calix Management System. Among the companies currently using the E5-400 is IdeaOne Telecom of Fargo, N.D., which provides services to business customers including hospitals, high-tech companies, and financial institutions. The E5-400 also will be on display at NXTcomm 08 and part of the demo mentioned earlier.
