Calix Extends GPON, Adds Flexible ONTs

Bob Wallace
09/22/2008

Calix Inc. today announced a new series of plug-ins for its GPON modules that extend the technology’s reach, and a set of optical network terminals (ONT) designed to transition from GPON to active Ethernet technology.

The broadband access vendor claims that the GPON coverage extenders obviate the need to spend $30,000 to $40,000 per site to extend the reach of the technology today. Calix would not, however, divulge specific pricing for the plug-ins.

“They’ll cost a small price premium over our existing products in the area of hundreds of dollars per subscriber,” according to Geoff Burke, director of marketing for Calix.

Extending the reach of GPON from 20 kilometers to 33 kilometers enables broadband service providers to less expensively serve more customers without having to build new facilities, equip them and maintain them on an ongoing basis.

Calix claims to have 300 customers worldwide deploying fiber-to-the-premises technology.

The new GX family of ONTs Calix announced can auto-detect GPON signaling and active Ethernet, said Burke. “We’re aiming to eliminate overlay networks.”
