Best Buy Extends Online Reach with Napster Buy

Another Move into Networking

09/16/2008

Electronics retailer Best Buy (BBY) made another move into networking this week with news that it plans to buy online music outfit Napster for $121 million.

Whether the retailer can make a successful go of it with online music in a market in which Apple Inc.’s iTunes reigns is a big question mark.

But the deal, which follows the retailer’s purchases of on-call IT service outfit Geek Squad and network service provider Speakeasy, does demonstrate once again that Best Buy is thinking strategically about how its business relates to what’s happening online.
