Berners-Lee Tackles the Digital Divide
Tara Seals
09/18/2008 “One Web” pioneer and open-access proselytizer Timothy Berners-Lee has created a new foundation, the World Wide Web Foundation, to create an international ecosystem to make Web access more pervasive. The foundation, which will have a specific focus on crossing the digital divide, will receive a $5 million grant over five years from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Berners-Lee is the director of the similarly named World Wide Web Consortium, devoted to the idea of the one Web — that is, regardless of access type, the open Internet is reachable and works the way it should.
