AT&T: No Free Wi-Fi via iPhone After All
07/18/2008
Free Wi-Fi! Just kidding! AT&T Inc. on Friday posted a notice on its Web site that iPhone users would be lucky enough to get free Wi-Fi within any of AT&T’s 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, including the ubiquitous Starbucks locations. There was rejoicing, there were huzzahs...and then, there was betrayal (you know how personally iPhone users take their connectivity). Because AT&T apparently “published the notice in error.” The problem is that sites like the Apple Insider picked up the story right away, followed by a rash of bloggers and eventually mainstream media outlets. For all the deets: It may have only been up an hour, but the mistaken notice was enough to make one wonder what’s going on over there, and why can’t iPhoners have more bars in more places? Especially since AT&T announced and recanted free Wi-Fi access back in May, too. Will there eventually be such a perk? Someone in marketing just trigger-happy? Stay tuned.
