AT&T Buys VeriSign Security
10/01/2009
AT&T Inc. has cut a deal to buy VeriSign Inc.'s global security consulting business for an undisclosed sum in an effort to shore up network-based enterprise data security. "The combined capabilities of VeriSign's security consulting business with AT&T's global reach, networking and security portfolio, will broaden our consulting and risk analysis expertise," said Ron Spears, CEO of AT&T business solutions, in a statement. AT&T already offers managed security services, but the success of enterprise mobility has shone a light on a greater need for security across the enterprise, within and without the HQ’s four walls. Also, VeriSign brings to the table its extensive roster of Fortune 500 companies, which it works with to firms to identify threats, coordinate responses to attacks and work on security compliance. AT&T shares fell 35 cents to $26.66 in afternoon trading, while VeriSign shares were down 72 cents, or 3 percent, to $22.97.
