AT&T Begins Metering Bandwidth
11/04/2008
First Comcast and Time Warner, now AT&T. The phone giant has decided to meter bandwidth, starting in Reno, Nev. AT&T says its metering will differ from that of its competitors. The company plans to provide a traffic meter to its customers, so they can keep up with their usage in real time. Caps for DSL subscribers will range from 20 GB to 150 GB per month. The max depends on which tier they sign up for. When a subscriber goes over their limit, they’ll be charged $1 per gigabyte. AT&T and other Internet providers argue that a handful of users hoard bandwidth and impact everyone’s experience online.
