AppTrigger 'Ignites' New Controller Release

AppTrigger today came out with Release 9.0 of its application solution controller, called Ignite.

The software allows applications – usually optimized for one type of network – to tie into multiple networks. It is sold through OEM partners including Intervoice Inc. and Unisys Corp.

“AppTrigger’s mission is based on the concept that service providers have invested in deploying vertical applications,” said Jose Deras, vice president of sales engineering. “They’re now migrating to IP, and IMS is catching up. But in the end it’s all about how much revenue you can generate from a subscriber. But beyond ARPU, we talk about it as ROI on the applications you’ve already deployed and that you’re about to deploy. So our goal is to be able to expend the reach of applications to all networks the service provider has or has acquired.”

Ignite Release 9.0 features four key new features, Deras said.

One is support for Bearer Independent Call Control (BICC), a UMTS Release 4.0 3GPP protocol that allows service providers to attach TDM networks to IP network. Deras said BICC is akin to the ISUP stack in the legacy world.

Also new with this release is the ability to do host media processing. Deras explained that service providers typically use telephony boards from companies such as AudioCodes to interconnect TDM and IP networks. However, with host media processing, carriers also can use the processing power on Intel servers they’re using to run the AppTrigger software to transcode the voice as well. That means the service provider doesn’t have to invest in separate boards.

A third new feature of Ignite Release 9.0 is its ability to control external media server via media server markup language, an evolving standard on how to control media servers to perform such functions as connect calls.

The fourth new capability of Release 9.0 lets Ignite act as a media resource broker, mediating and allocating media server resources among applications for more optimized resource use and reliability.
