AT&T Undertakes U-verse Battery Replacement
Bob Wallace
01/17/2008 Looking to ensure delivery of its video-driven U-verse triple-play bundle, AT&T on Thursday confirmed it has begun a sweeping effort to replace some 17,000 batteries used for back up power in network cabinets.
The batteries were said to have factored in fires in multiple cabinets used to deliver U-verse. AT&T said that, over time, it learned the batteries “no longer met our stringent performance and safety criteria,” resulting in its decision “to move forward with the removal as quickly as possible,” according to a company spokesperson.
The carrier claims that since these batteries are used only as a backup to commercial power, it does not anticipate any interruptions to U-verse service during this process. AT&T did not say how long the process will take or what if any associated charges will be incurred. “Our U-verse deployment and strategy remains on-track and we’re very pleased with our progress,” said the spokesperson.
U-verse consists of TV, Internet and voice services delivered over an all-IP infrastructure. It competes with multiservice bundles offered by incumbent cablecos and satellite operators.
