FTTH Operator OEN Discontinues Services

Bob Wallace
11/20/2007

Promising upstart Optical Entertainment Network Inc. (OEN) is discontinuing all services in its FISION triple-play bundle, advising its current customers to “seek alternative providers for television, Internet and phone.”

The Houston-based FTTH network operator, which had been trying a number of routes to raise funds, apparently didn’t reach its goals, though the firm’s CTO appeared as recently as a month ago at the TelcoTV show in Atlanta espousing OEN and its services in a panel.

OEN had been in competition with AT&T, Comcast and DBS operators.

The optical operator had already taken cost-cutting measures in an effort to prolong its operation, but the future is uncertain for the firm. Calls to its headquarters are directed to a recording blaming “circumstances beyond our control,” for the discontinuation of all services.

It’s also uncertain which members of OEN’s senior management are still with the company and which are still working on a full-time basis.

OEN grabbed attention by employing an FTTH network to deploy its triple play service and was among the first to turn up high-speed symmetric Internet access. The company served customers in parts of Houston and had long hoped to expand.

OEN CTO Alan Easty told attendees at the TelcoTV panel at which he spoke that the company essentially served rich “oil industry executives” with DVRs and seven to nine standard definition sets throughout their homes.

Repeated calls to OEN were routed to the recording.
