Verizon Completes Test of 100gbps Optical Transport

11/19/2007

The days of the fiber glut are gone. Rather than complaining about oversupply, service providers around the world now are pumping up their transport networks to aggregate and move the ever-greater amounts of traffic created by the boom in online video, among other residential and business broadband applications.

A recent case in point is Verizon, which today announced that it has completed a field test of 100gbps optical transmission between Miami and Tampa, Fla.

The company transported FiOS traffic over a 100gbps signal on a single wavelength using Alcatel-Lucent’s 1625 LambdaXtreme gear.

“This trial proves what we’ve been saying: The move from 40gbps – available from Verizon Business today – to 100gbps will be exponentially quicker than the move from 10gbps to 40gbps,” said Fred Briggs, executive vice president of network operations and technology for Verizon Business. “As the industry moves toward 100gbps, we’re leading the way.”

He added that applications based on online video are drivers for higher bandwidth, but there are many large business applications – such as database applications and file delivery, disaster recovery and business continuity solutions – that also are driving the need for capacity that this 100gpbs test addressed.
