MFA Forum Changes Name to IP/MPLS Forum

10/22/2007

The MFA Forum said Monday it has changed its name to the IP/MPLS Forum.

The forum said the change reflects a renewed focus to drive global industry adoption of IP/MPLS solutions in the market, by focusing on standards initiatives for IP/MPLS such as inter carrier interconnect (ICI), mobile wireless backhaul, and security.

The IP/MPLS Forum is a global association of telecommunications, networking, enterprises, and other technology companies focused on driving the adoption of IP/MPLS-based networks, services and solutions.

The forum is comprised of both technical and marketing committees as well as a service provider council. It works to develop specifications on how to apply, implement and deploy IP/MPLS networks, defines interoperability test criteria and creates and delivers educational programs to educate the industry about IP/MPLS.

The IP/MPLS Forum bases its specifications as much as possible on existing industry standards and maintains open liaison and working relationships with other key SDOs such as the IETF, ITU-T and the IEEE.

“In April 2005, the ATM Forum, and MPLS and Frame Relay Alliance merged to form the MFA Forum, with the intent of converging the implementation of multi service packet technologies in the global networking communications industry,” said Andrew Malis, president and chairman of the IP/MPLS Forum. “We’ve made significant progress toward this goal over the past two years, and feel the organization should now focus its attention exclusively on IP/MPLS given the market’s direction, and the opportunities and challenges available to the industry through this critical technology.”
