RedBack Broadens Edge Router Options

RedBack Networks Inc. has unveiled a robust edge router to help service providers keep pace with expanding wireline and wireless video service and feature deployments, while adding functionality typically found in separate devices.

In addition to helping service providers bulk up access networks, Redback’s new multi-service SmartEdge 1200 router also broadens the video services strategy of parent company Ericsson Inc., which in the last year has acquired RedBack, Entrisphere Corp. and most recently, Tandberg TV

Redback’s third-generation router is designed to connect wired and wireless and features three innovations: doubling carrier capacity for new video upgrades; extending triple-play services to broadband mobile networks; and supporting deep-packet inspection, session border controller functions and network security for carriers and customers.

The company said that with this product it has created the first million-subscriber rack for triple play service video features such as HD, video-on-demand and what it calls “broadband mobility,” an industry where its parent Ericsson is well-established.

RedBack said the SmartEdge 1200 is compatible with the SmartEdge 400 and SmartEdge 800. All three router platforms share a common operating system, line-cards and network software applications.

The SmartEdge routers can also dynamically bridge the gap between traditional TV and the Internet. The SmartEdge platform allows broadband users to receive standard definition, HD and HD VoD to Internet-enabled cell phones, PCs and TVs, Redback said, adding that the new system can extend triple-play services to broadband mobile users at future speeds from 14mbps to 144mbps.
