Ricochet Wins Denver Muni Wireless Contract
04/02/2007
Ricochet Networks is back, living up to its name. It has reached an agreement with the City and County of Denver to incorporate Wi-Fi, WiMAX and other broadband services to blanket the area. First to go live will be sections of Denver’s Capitol Hill and Golden Triangle downtown neighborhoods, an area of approximately 2.5 square miles. Ricochet will use network gear from sister company Proxim Wireless (both are owned by Terabeam Inc.), including Wi-Fi Mesh, point-to-multipoint and wireless backhaul equipment. The existing Ricochet network, a patented mesh Micro Cellular Data Network for broadband wireless Internet access, has been operating since 2002 in the Denver metropolitan area and serves more than 6,000 municipal, residential and business users. Denver currently utilizes Ricochet wireless modems in many police mobile units and other city agencies. However, the municipal wireless rollout with the city will be the first high-profile success for the company, which has bounced from owner to owner since 2001 when it declared bankruptcy following a failed wireless broadband data play that left it with equipment in 16 markets but no viable business plan. Recently, Ricochet has targeted wireless niche applications for public safety, and acts as a WISP in San Diego and Denver.
