TiVo Launches Remote Scheduling with Verizon Wireless
Bob Wallace
03/14/2007 Looking to build on the TV viewing convenience afforded by the DVR, industry pioneer TiVo Inc. announced a deal Wednesday with Verizon Wireless whereby its mobile customers can sign up and remotely control the operation of their TiVo boxes from select cell phones.
With that target in their crosshairs, the duo has launched TiVo Mobile scheduling, a downloadable application available only through Verizon Wireless, that allows subscribers to purchase the service through select handsets and set recordings on TiVo Series2 or Series3 boxes.
TiVo Mobile scheduling uses the TiVo interface to give subscribers the ability to easily search for and browse through listings to find shows that they want to record. Subscribers to TiVo Mobile will also have access to premium entertainment content that is updated daily, including a customizable channel lineup, the most popular and most recorded shows and a current list of recommendations from TiVo.
Concurrently, Verizon and AT&T Inc. have announced the ability to remotely control the DVRs that come with their IPTV services, initially via a PC. Verizon announced plans at the Consumer Electronics Show in January to extend this capability to cell phones later in the year.
TiVo Mobile scheduling is available for $1.99 monthly access on select Get It Now-enabled phones, including the Samsung SCH-a950, Chocolate by LG and LG VX8300.
TiVo said it selected Seattle-based Action Engine Corp., a mobile software provider, to develop the TiVo Mobile scheduling service.
