Access/On Upgrades Network With Turin Platform

02/06/2007

Access/On Multimedia Inc. has deployed Turin Networks Inc.’s Traverse Multiservice Transport Switch so it can upgrade its overall capacity and enable new services such as Ethernet and IP video.

Access/On operates a 1,200-mile fiber optic network for 13 RLECs serving customers in North Carolina. Its upgraded network began carrying live traffic this week.

The company said it used the Turin platform because of its carrier Ethernet transport and switching capabilities and its OC-192 scalability. That gave Access/On the ability to deliver IP-based services like video as well as EVPL and transparent LAN (E-LAN) services.

The platform also allowed Access/On to upgrade its optical backbone to 10GB while using roughly one-third the space and power of the previous equipment, the company said.

Access/On originally deployed an OC-48 optical fiber network in 1995, but the equipment has been discontinued.
