AT&T Offers Homezone in Connecticut

02/01/2007

Aiming to expand the footprint of its video services in areas where it doesn’t offer landline IPTV driven bundles, AT&T Inc. has announced availability of its Homezone service, which includes satellite provided TV, to broadband Internet users in Connectitcut.

Homezone integrates AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet, DISH Network satellite television and AT&T Home Networking services via a single in-home device made by 2Wire Inc. This move extends the product's availability across the full broadband footprint for AT&T's traditional 13-state territory.

AT&T’s U-verse landline IPTV based offering is currently available in parts of 11 markets, including three cities in Connecticut. With Homezone, AT&T can quickly reach a broader, and occasionally overlapping, audience without network expansion and builds.

However, having two video offerings with availability overlap and common features can cause confusion to customers and may make AT&T’s marketing efforts more difficult, according to industry analysts. To its credit, AT&T has said from the outset that U-verse would be its primary TV offering.

Nonetheless, Homezone is appealing because it features digital video recording (DVR), movies on demand and photo- and music-sharing, along with storage for both. The DVR can be controlled remotely via the Web.

AT&T Homezone is available to new AT&T | DISH Network residential customers who either already have, or plan to order, high-speed Internet and the 2Wire home networking gateway.

The telco said customers can select from several broadband speeds and satellite TV packages, then purchase Homezone service for an additional $9.99 a month. In addition, a current promotion offers the networking gateway for free after mail-in rebate, a $79.00 value.
