Infinera Selected for Regional Network

01/09/2007

The Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative (MBC) has selected Infinera for a long-haul regional network in the eastern United States.

The initial deployment will provide network connectivity among Atlanta, Charlotte, N.C., Raleigh, N.C., Richmond, Va., McLean, Va., and Ashburn, Va., as well as the 700-mile regional fiber network MBC has built in rural Virginia.

This is the first open-access optical transport network project funded by state tobacco dollars, MBC said. Its aim is to accelerate economic development in rural and underdeveloped areas by making Internet and telecom connectivity more affordable and scalable for service providers in those areas, MBC said.

MBC is a not-for-profit cooperative established with funding from the Virginia Tobacco Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration.

Infinera, which has a digital optical network, created its DTN switched WDM system to integrate high-capacity DWDM, bandwidth management and GMPLS service in one platform.
