AT&T Confirms Software Snags in IPTV Rollout
Bob Wallace
01/26/2007 Glitches with software are at least in part responsible for the delay in the rollout of AT&T Inc.’s U-Verse IPTV-driven service bundle, as first reported in xchange magazine and xchangemag.com. In an earning calls Thursday, AT&T executives cited software as being a reason for the telco’s service deployment, which after being repeatedly and publicly stated as headed for 15 markets by the end of 2006, was scaled back to just 11 markets. Although the executives did not identify the software vendor by name, sources in the xchange magazine February cover story on the AT&T service claimed Microsoft IPTV software was suffering scalability problems, which would limit deployment, which neither party never completely confirmed nor denied. In the wake of the deployment scaleback, AT&T has yet to disclose deployment details in terms of additional cities slated to receive the service, or when it would be more widely available.
