Sun Announces New Win, Product Upgrade, Telecom Partners
Paula Bernier
12/04/2006 Sun Microsystems Inc. has unleashed a flurry of telecom-related news in the past few weeks. This weekend, the company announced that Taiwan telecom giant Chunghwa Telecom has chosen Sun Fireservers and Solaris OS to power its Multimedia on Demand (MOD) back-end server platforms. Sun also has upgraded features of the Sun Java SSystem Content Delivery Server (CDS), a mobile content management platform used by such companies as Telecom New Zealand, Telefonica Argentina and Telefonica Mexico. And late last month, Sun, Ericsson and Nokia formed what they call the Telecommunications Platform Initiative, which is jointly developing the requirements for a standardized, integrated telecommunications technology platform to simplify technology integration by enabling design, development and supply chain efficiencies. The Chungwa win is notable, according to Sun, because it is known for being a leading-edge company. “They selected Solaris and our platforms because of the open nature of the products that ensure RoI, TCO and consequently near zero cost of exit should they wish to move later on,” said Darrell Jordan-Smith, vice president of Global Communications Industry for Sun. “The domestic readers should be keen to understand the above because it drives revenue and cost with minimum risk on a open platform.” As for the new release of CDS, it brings to the product enhanced billing and multimedia support. “It is open sourced … so this is a clear example of how Sun will continue to deliver value to the community by enhancing the CDS platform, even though we have open sourced the platform,” Jordan-Smith said. Service providers are using CDS today for such applications as content delivery of games, ring tones, music, video, download updates and more. As for the Telecommunications Platform Initiative, Jordan-Smith explained that by collaborating on a series of publicly available requirements documents, for the operations, administration and management layer (OA&M) and service layer environments, the members of TPI will provide the broader telecommunications industry with new alternatives to improve time to service, time to market and ultimately, time to revenue. TPI will involve Sun’s Java Enterprise System, Sun Cluster, Solaris, Sparc Niagara and Opteron products, and the OSS suites of Ericsson and Nokia. Jordan-Smith said this effort “will divert more resources to support the development of value-added applications that Ericsson and Nokia provide today. The resources they have in integrating such platforms can be diverted to enhancing time to market and services that differentiate their offers to our end clients.” The TeleManagement Forum has been briefed on this initiative, he continued, and “they are supportive of it as it supports their mission. It is open standards-based and incorporates the TMF members’ mission.” Ericsson www.ericsson.com Nokia www.nokia.com Sun Microsystems Inc. http://sun.com
