YouTube Goes Mobile with Verizon Distribution Deal
Bob Wallace
11/28/2006 In its first distribution deal with a wireless operator, YouTube Inc., a consumer media company that lets people watch and share original videos on the Internet, announced Tuesday its entertainment service will soon be available on Verizon Wireless mobile devices. Starting early next month, Verizon V CAST consumers will be able to access a selection of YouTube videos from their mobile phones exclusively for a limited time. YouTube said this is the first in a series of deals it expects to sign with mobile operators. YouTube said it will deliver a sampling of the most popular videos to V CAST subscribers in the United States. The company said its upcoming move into the mobile space will enable a new audience of mobile users to enjoy entertaining videos virtually whenever and wherever they want. “People want to be entertained in a way that fits their individual lifestyle. This service offers our community and Verizon Wireless subscribers a new opportunity to connect and engage with their favorite videos. We will continue to roll out more exciting partnerships and features for the mobile user over the coming year,” said Steve Chen, CTO and co-founder of YouTube. YouTube will enable customers to access video clips on any of the V CAST-enabled handsets, including the Chocolate (LG VX8500) and MOTOKRZR K1m. Video enthusiasts, the duo explained, also will be able to use their mobile phones to record and share their favorite moments. To get V CAST, Verizon customers can purchase a V CAST VPak subscription for $15 monthly access, or $3 daily access, added to their Verizon calling plan. The subscription includes unlimited basic video, but application download fees apply for 3D games and premium video. There are no airtime charges to stream or watch V CAST content.
