Cingular Wireless Taps Alcatel for IP Migration

Cingular Wireless LLC has selected Alcatel's multiservice transport solution for IP-based HSDPA services like high-speed data and video-on-demand. Cingular launched a commercial HSDPA broadband wireless access service in December 2005.

Alcatel will aid Cingular's efforts to migrate large-scale multiservice ATM networks to IP/MPLS without compromising high availability, manageability and QoS, the companies said. Alcatel's multiservice transport solution includes the 7670 Routing Switch Platform, which provides support for IP/MPLS and ATM. Coupled with the 1671 Service Connect multiservice cross-connect, it can provide grooming and traffic optimization.

Meanwhile, the 5620 Network Manager provides end-to-end, point-and-click network management of Alcatel's solution, along with a suite of operations, administration, maintenance and provisioning tools.

"We will be moving in lock-step with Cingular's aggressive development of the first HSDPA 3G network in the U.S.," said Hubert de Pesquidoux, president of Alcatel's North American activities. "The Alcatel solution is extremely flexible and scalable as well as simple to manage and will provide significant reductions in Cingular's overall CAPEX and OPEX."
