Avici Joins IPsphere Forum
Bob Wallace
10/19/2006 Longtime router power Avici Systems Inc. has joined the IPsphere Forum (IPSF) as a full member, giving the global service provider and infrastructure vendor organization representation from the three top route makers, which include Cisco Systems Inc. and Juniper Networks. The group, which has been focusing on crafting a common way to deliver on the business of IP, has benefited from a recent surge in membership, primarily led by companies that provide components needed to support commerce on IP networks (see story). “We joined largely due to the fact that they were taking a unique approach in their standardization efforts -- by defining a holistic framework for service coordination (Service, Management, Control, and Network),” said Esmerelda Swartz, marketing vice president for Avici. “The industry has realized that successful NGN requires evolution from stovepipe services model to a layered services architecture. For carriers, it is about service differentiation through blended services and revenue sharing through content brokering relationships between providers. In order for this to work, the business framework for how these transactions happen needs to be in place.” The IPSF’s fourth quarter membership meeting is scheduled to take place December 11 - 13 in London.
