Juniper Adds Ethernet-specific Routers to its Product Line
Paula Bernier
10/18/2006 Juniper Networks Inc. is introducing a new family of routers built exclusively for Ethernet applications. The 960gbps-capacity MX960 is the first born of the lot of new Ethernet services routers that combine Layer 2 switching and Layer 3 routing. “This is Juniper's first purpose-built solution for Ethernet,” said Jeff Baher, Juniper's director of carrier Ethernet strategy. He said the MX960 is a higher capacity option to the competing Alcatel 7750 and Cisco 7600 solutions. The chassis provides up to 12 40gbps slots for Juniper's new dense port concentrator (DPC) cards, which can bring port density up to 480GB Ethernet ports and 48 ports of 10GB Ethernet per system. The distributed intelligence and packet processing of the MX960 and DPC cards are powered by the I-chip, Juniper's next-generation packet forwarding engine technology. The gear can be used for such applications as mobile backhaul and convergence; residential multiplay and teleworking services; core, edge and aggregation; and business transport and VPN services. And Juniper emphasizes that the MX960 leverages its proven JUNOS operating system, which powers more than 27,000 Juniper M- and T-series routers currently deployed with some of the largest service provider networks worldwide. Slated for general availability in the first quarter of next year, the MX960 will sell for between $100,000 and $400,000. Juniper Networks Inc. www.juniper.net
