Oracle Standardizes Hosted PBX Offer

09/25/2006

Oracle on Monday reintroduced the hosted PBX product it got through the acquisition of Net4Call in April. But rather than just changing the name, what is now known as the Oracle Virtual PBX has also been adapted to support standard technologies including J2EE, said Vittorio Viarengo, Oracle’s vice president of development. That will enable service providers, third-party software firms and Oracle to more easily add new functionality and create new, enhanced services based on Oracle Virtual PBX, which means faster time to market for service providers, he said.

“We are helping [service providers] move away from the silo-based [method] of building service toward a much more efficient and productive way of building services.”

J2EE, which stands for Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition, is a standard-based Java platform that defines a set of services for the Java language. It allows developers to create services and applications very quickly.

The updated hosted PBX product also is now certified with multiple Parlay gateways from such companies as Aepona, Ericsson and Lucent Technologies.

Oracle Virtual PBX “is another step that shows our commitment to the telecom market,” said Viarengo.

The solution is among the first out-of-the-box services of the previously announced Oracle Service Delivery Platform (Oracle SDP), which will provide a suite of out-of-the-box, revenue-generating services that can be easily deployed by operators and service providers. In addition to J2EE, Oracle SDP supports such standards as SIP, SIP Servlets, and Parlay/Parlay X. It also addresses service portability, IMS and VoIP.

All this support for standards makes it easier for service providers to integrate new services and features with their existing BSSs and OSSs.
