Akimbo, Sonic Expand VoD Service Reach

Digital media software provider Sonic Solutions and Akimbo Systems have announced a marketing and licensing partnership that will expand the reach of the Akimbo Service. Akimbo will be integrated with Roxio Venue, Sonic's media application, to provide PC users with access to Akimbo's 14,000-plus programs. This partnership follows a similar deal announced earlier this year that makes Akimbo’s service available to AT&T’s Homezone TV service subscribers. In the future, Akimbo also plans to incorporate Sonic AuthorScript DVD-on-demand technology that will allow consumers to record downloaded entertainment to DVD.

"This collaboration with Sonic increases Akimbo's potential subscriber base by millions and offers new benefits for Akimbo's content partners," said Joshua Goldman, CEO of Akimbo Systems.

Under the agreement, Akimbo will distribute Roxio Venue with the Akimbo Service directly to consumers and also through Akimbo's service provider partners, including ISPs and telecommunications companies. Sonic will include Akimbo as a service provider in the retail version of Roxio Venue.

In addition, Roxio Venue will incorporate Sonic's DVD-on-demand technology, which supports managed recording of entertainment using the content scramble system. Roxio Venue also will be distributed through Sonic's OEM and direct channels, giving content partners such as Akimbo exposure to a massive community of digital-enabled consumers.
