Redback Welcomes New Little Member to SmartEdge Family

Redback Networks Inc. has come out with its most compact offer yet – the SmartEdge 100 – to address triple-play applications in smaller PoPS, remote COs and MTUs; lower and mid-level wireless aggregation and backhaul; business VPNs; and more.

“There is nobody in the industry with so much edge routing or sub control in such a small form factor,” said Arpit Joshipura, vice president of product management at Redback.

The new, 2RU SmartEdge 100 supports up to 8,000 subscribers; offers 12gbps, 7mpps performance; has two FlexSlots; and has modular interface cards.

That compares with Redback’s existing 5RU SmartEdge 400 that supports 24,000 subscribers; has a capacity of 80gbps, 84mpps; offers fully redundant operation; has four universal slots; and supports all SmartEdge Interface Modules. Redback’s largest box is the SmartEdge 800, a 240gbps, 432mpps, 9RU box that can scale to 48,000 subscribers and boasts fully redundant operation, 12 universal slots and supports all SmartEdge Interface Modules.

The operating systems and ASICs on all the SmartEdge boxes are “not adapted, they’re identical,” said Marco Wanders, chief marketing officer for Redback. And the programmability of the ASIC allows the boxes to support QoS, IPv6 and other new capabilities as the market requires without having to introduce new hardware, Wanders said.

In introducing the new product, Wanders and Joshipura, talked about Redback’s Smart Broadband Network Vision. That vision is based on three tenets, they said, including personalization, efficiency and the ability to be adaptive.

They said residential requirements now are driving service provider network decisions and investments because IPTV is a focus, gaming is becoming more important and phones are starting to speak IP. All this means there are multiple IP applications, multiple IP devices and many users on service provider networks. And that means service providers have to deal with more complexity in managing IP sessions and integrating services while at the same time trying to manage their costs. Redback says the SmartEdge addresses all that.

The SmartEdge 100 will begin shipping in the second quarter.

Redback would not comment on pricing for the box, other than to say pricing will be “competitive.”
