Fujitsu: New Hybrid GPON Architecture to Save Providers Money
02/22/2006
Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., a supplier of IT and wireline/wireless networking solutions, has unveiled a new hybrid GPON architecture that lets companies upgrade to provide higher bandwidth without having to fund expensive overbuilds or additions. “The new GPON standard incorporates several enhancements, including higher downstream/upstream speeds, support for native transport of Ethernet and TDM services via Generic Encapsulation Method, and the option to eliminate legacy ATM protocols,” said Doug Saylor, senior vice president of planning and development at Fujitsu Network Communications. Current PON deployments rely on BPON technology that provides 622mbps of downstream bandwidth and 155mbps of upstream bandwidth, Fujitsu said. The newer GPON technology supports 2.488gbps downstream and 1.244gbps upstream, allowing for residential speeds of up to 75mbps per home. Many service providers say they will need more bandwidth to support their IPTV services, VoD and HDTV programming, and Fujitsu is pitching its new hybrid GPON as a way for providers to save money as consumers increase their bandwidth consumption.
