Skype Adds Video Calling, New Interface

Skype Technologies S.A. has released a beta version of Skype 2.0, a new version of its software for making Internet calls that adds features such as video calls to the popular VoIP service.

In addition, Skype has announced product partnerships with Logitech, a leading maker of PC cameras and other peripherals, as well as Creative Technology Ltd., a manufacturer of computer audio and video accessories, and Six Apart Ltd., a provider of Weblog software and services.

Besides the video calling, the new version of Skype features a simplified user interface that gives one-click access to features and options; so-called “emoticons” to show the caller’s mood and availability; avatars and custom ring tones; notification of a contact’s time zone; grouping of contacts, including the ability to launch a conference with an entire group; contact search by typing a name; and a Skype toolbar for Microsoft Outlook, which provides one-click calling to contacts from the Microsoft Outlook address book.

Some of the features, such as video calling, emoticons and grouping of contacts, have been available for some time on other instant-messaging and Internet calling services, such as Yahoo! Messenger and Microsoft Corp.’s MSN.

Logitech has certified that a range of its newer cameras will work with Skype. The relationship is not exclusive says a Logitech spokesperson. “We are leaders in Webcams and headsets. Skype drives the market for those products, and so people would want a high-quality headset and Webcam to make the most of it,” says the spokesperson.

Skype also recently announced a relationship with Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems Inc., that includes marketing a cordless phone that takes free Skype Internet phone calling off the computer and puts it into the hands of callers. The cordless phone includes a small base station that plugs into a computer USB port.
