Citynet Deploys Infinera’s DTN Platform

07/19/2005

Citynet has deployed Infinera Corp.’s DTN platform on a portion of its network after completing a nine-month lab and field trial of Infinera’s hardware, software and EMS components.

OnFiber Communications announced last month the first metro-specific deployment of Infinera’s DTN system, which was introduced in spring 2004. In May, wholesaler Level 3 Communications Inc. announced it will upgrade the capacity of its optical network in the United States and Europe using Infinera’s system. Level 3 is the first major carrier in the United States to deploy DTN. German carrier freenet selected the system earlier in the year.

Citynet is a wholesale IXC carrier with an 8,000 route-mile network footprint in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern markets. It offers bandwidth solutions for wireless and wireline voice, data and Internet carriers.

Citynet says it chose Infinera for its “Digital Optical Networking” technology that includes the quick delivery of high-bandwidth optical services, the ability to offer new services such as 10-gigabit Ethernet, as well as improved network reliability and service manageability.

Incorporating Infinera’s “photonic integrated circuit” technology, the Infinera DTNs provide dense wave-division multiplexing and digital bandwidth management capabilities and will support the increased demand Citynet is seeing for optical wavelength, private line and IP services. Infinera’s product architecture uses large-scale PICs, which convert all optical traffic at a given location into electronic signals. These then can be processed digitally, creating the Digital Optical Networking concept, Infinera says.
