Sprint Taps Hesse for Local Telecommunications Division

Sprint Corp. has named Daniel R. Hesse as CEO of the company's Local Telecommunications Division. The appointment took effect yesterday. Hesse, 51, has spent more than 27 years in telecom, including 23 years at AT&T Corp., where he served as president and CEO of AT&T Wireless Services from 1997-2000. He most recently was chairman, president and CEO of Terabeam Corp., a broadband wireless systems developer in Seattle. Hesse will oversee local operations in 18 states. He has responsibility for about 16,000 employees and reports to Gary Forsee, Sprint’s chairman and CEO. Following Sprint's expected merger with Nextel this year, Hesse is slated to become president and CEO of the local operations resulting from the spin-off.
