SBC Communications Inc. on Monday announced it would offer customers wireless high-speed Internet access for $1.99 a month if they also purchased a DSL service the company delivers in partnership with Yahoo!.
Customers could pay as little as $29 a month for monthly DSL and Wi-Fi service, which is available at approximately 3,900 locations across the country, including select McDonald’s restaurants and UPS Store locations, San Antonio, Texas-based SBC said. With a one-year commitment, SBC Yahoo! DSL customers will pay $1.99 a month for SBC FreedomLink Wi-Fi service. As a standalone service, FreedomLink costs $19.95 a month.
SBC, the second largest local phone company, said customers who sign up for the DSL service will be able to use FreedomLink service at no charge until April 15.
SBC and other large phone companies are touting discounted, bundled packages to compete aggressively in the high-speed Internet market with cable operators such as Comcast Corp. Earlier this month, Qwest Communications International Inc. announced a strategic marketing alliance with DIRECTV Inc. to market satellite television service to consumers across the West and offer bundled discounts on certain combinations of DSL and DIRECTV services.
Phone companies also are expanding where their broadband services are available. Last week, Verizon Communications Inc. announced launching DSL service for the first time in Idaho, Ohio and South Carolina and expanding service in 11 states, including California, Michigan and Virginia. New York-based Verizon, the biggest local phone company, provides DSL service in 26 states and the District of Columbia.
