Lucent, Riverstone Networks Partner to Deliver Ethernet Solutions

Lucent Technologies and Riverstone Networks on Thursday announced an agreement to partner to deliver carrier-class Ethernet solutions for carrier networks around the world.

The companies say they will combine Lucent optical, data and access systems and Riverstone Ethernet routers, allowing carriers to deliver DSL-based multimedia services, Ethernet-based corporate VPNs and business Internet services.

One Ethernet solution will allow a carrier to provide a service that includes accessing frame relay and ATM virtual private networks (VPNs), says Lucent spokesman Mike Alva.

Alva says Lucent also will utilize relationships with other partners, including Juniper Networks, as part of Lucent’s complete Ethernet solutions.

“By teaming with Riverstone, we can help our customers also extend their widely deployed Lucent Ethernet over SONET/SDH metro networks, and to introduce next generation Ethernet services using these same networks," Michael Nielsen, president, Lucent Technologies data networking group, said in a press release.

Lucent, of Murray Hill, N.J., says it will sell the combined solutions and provide technical support and maintenance to customers who purchase Riverstone's metro Ethernet routers from Lucent.

The terms of the non-exclusive agreement call for Lucent to integrate Riverstone's MPLS-based Ethernet routing equipment with Lucent systems, software and professional services. The companies say this will allow service providers worldwide to link separate networks into an integrated, flexible Ethernet network.
