8x8 Expands VoIP with Level 3

Level 3 Communications Inc. is helping 8x8 Inc. expand its Internet-based phone service to Beverly Hills, Calif., Bloomington, Ill., Flagstaff, Ariz., Rockaway, N.J., and other areas.

8x8, of Santa Clara, Calif., is among the small group of startups providing Internet-based phone service to consumers and businesses.

The agreement with Level 3 allows 8x8 to cover a total of 300 area codes and 2,400 rate centers, according to 8x8 spokeswoman Joan Citelli. A rate center is a geographic area used by local phone companies to set rate boundaries for billing and issuing phone numbers.

8x8 had approximately 11,000 customers as of March 31, For the fiscal year ending March 31, the company posted a net loss of $3 million on $9.3 million in revenue.

Shares of 8x8 were trading late this morning at $2.80 on the Nasdaq.
