WilTel Taps Teligent to Extend Access Points

Through a deal with Teligent, WilTel Communications has added fixed wireless access to Extended On-Net, enabling WilTel customers one more way to get onto its network.

Anthony Tomae, senior vice president of marketing, recently told XCHANGE that because WilTel has more than 12,000 access points, the companies and carriers it serves don’t have to pay exorbitant fees for local connections to get ontoWilTel’s network.

Extended On-Net, which offers access to WilTel’s network in tier 2 and 3 cities, encompasses more than 300 high-bandwidth, on-net access locations along WilTel's nationwide fiber-optic backbone to provide colocation and access to WilTel's portfolio of services, including IP and Ethernet.

Through its relationship with Teligent, WilTel can now provide wireless access from carrier and enterprise customer premises to any of the Extended On-Net access points over line-of-sight dependent, point-to-point microwave links operating in licensed

spectrum. Customers can choose from unprotected private line wireless DS3 circuits or protected private line wireless DS3 or OC3 circuits. Ethernet wireless access is also available. Unprotected Ethernet wireless access is available at standard 10/100mbps Ethernet interfaces at up to 45mbps, while protected Ethernet wireless access is available at standard 10/100mbps Ethernet interfaces at up to 100mbps.

"The combination of fixed wireless connectivity to Extended On-Net and WilTel's managed services creates tremendous opportunities for customers in Tier 2 and 3 markets, because now they can have direct, on-net access to WilTel's robust services in the manner that is most effective for them – be it fiber builds or direct wireless connections," says Tomae.
