Motorola to Acquire Quantum Bridge Communications

Motorola Inc. on Tuesday said it had entered a definitive agreement to acquire Massachusetts-based Quantum Bridge Communications Inc. for an undisclosed sum. Quantum Bridge makes FTTP equipment.

Motorola said the agreement will improve its ability to offer a broadband platform allowing service providers to deliver the so-called triple play of phone, Internet and video services. The biggest U.S. phone companies plan to build fiber to millions of homes in the coming years in order to compete more effectively with such cable TV providers as Comcast Corp. and offer advanced services like video-on-demand and online gaming.

Motorola said it expects the agreement to close in the second quarter.
