SBC Communications Inc. has tapped Nortel Networks to provide it with Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5100 equipment to offer business customers advanced calling features similar to those VoIP can deliver, but without widespread deployment of new equipment.
The platform, which allows businesses to maintain the functionality and numbering plan of their current voice network, delivers new features such as call screening, call logging, picture caller ID, desktop video calling, and integrated instant messaging.
A fully managed solution for the Nortel Networks MCS 5100, which can work in conjunction with traditional business Centrex or PBX voice systems, is under development and will be introduced later in 2004.
"Many businesses today face a telecommunications dilemma: They're looking to take advantage of the capabilities and efficiencies of Voice over IP, but they also need to save money by maximizing the life of existing systems," says Chuck Rudnick, senior vice president of business marketing for SBC Communications. "These service offerings will provide excellent new options for businesses that have heavily invested in their existing networks. The new offerings add to our comprehensive IP portfolio, allowing us to deliver the right solution for nearly any business need or circumstance."
SBC also has a portfolio of hosted and premises equipment-based pure VoIP solutions, including SBC PremierSERV Hosted IP Communications Service (HIPCS) and SBC PremierSERV Total IP Communications Solution.
