FTC to Make Do-Not-Call Registry Available in July
06/03/2003
The telemarketing arms of telephone companies may face a tough road beginning this fall. The Federal Trade Commission on Monday said American consumers could register on a national do-not-call registry beginning next month. “The National ‘Do Not Call’ Register will give consumers a choice about the number of telemarketing calls they receive at home,” according to Monday’s FTC statement. Beginning in September 2003, telemarketers must “scrub” their calling lists. The FTC says consumers placing their phone numbers on the registry should see a decrease in calls after Oct. 1. Many states also have implemented do-not-call lists to protect consumers.
