WorldCom to Change Name

04/10/2003

For nearly a year, the name WorldCom Inc. rarely has been mentioned in news headlines without using words like “bankruptcy” and “scandal.”

But the tainted moniker is going away as the telecommunications titan aims to emerge from the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history and leave behind a multi-billion dollar accounting fraud, newspapers reported Thursday.

WorldCom officials expect to reveal plans next week to change the corporate name to MCI, its long-distance subsidiary, according to The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. WorldCom plans to change its name next week as it files its reorganization plan in bankruptcy court, the papers reported.

WorldCom CEO Michael D. Capellas disclosed the name change in a private presentation to industry analysts today, the Post reported.
